The Benefits of Meditation or Why Meditate

The principal benefit of meditation which has been so glamorized and which immediately comes to mind is that of stress management. In today's world and especially in our society, stress is an inherent part of daily life. Therefore, stress management is definitely a desired benefit of any activity. Stress management also means a healthier lifestyle and a healthier body. However, meditation properly practiced that is, on a daily basis, can have a rejuvenating effect not only on our body but also on our relationships with loved ones and in our workplace, home and general environment.

However, the true objective of meditation is entering the silence of the mind, that is, when thoughts as we know them come to a complete stop and we are able to be free of the mental chattering that accompanies us daily, unceasingly, for a brief moment. It is during this moment that the body can rejuvenate itself and even heal itself. In the silence of the mind, all things are possible and nothing is impossible.                    Source : unknown

Meditation is also a great way to lower high blood pressure, to calm an over-active mind.  When you are meditating all of the bodily processes tend to slow down and the healing processes begin in your body.  All of my students swear by the method I teach to help them calm their minds and their bodies after a high-stress day.  Once you have learned the discipline of relaxation, you will find you will be able to get into a relaxed state in no time.

You will learn to find that special place inside of you where strength and calm reside. You are the only one allowed in this place. This place is in the center of your being (heart), or your soul/spirit. Call it whatever you wish.  See Meditation page.

The truth is that learning how to meditate is pretty simple. There are several reasons to meditate. It's one of the best things you can do for your mind, your soul (recognizing that you have one) and your body.  First your mind gets a much needed rest after a day's work and stressful situations. Meditation helps relive the stress that has built up in you. Whether you have disturbing dreams or have problems that just won't quit, you can give your mind and body the rest it needs by achieving a state of meditation.  If you want to achieve patience, tolerance and a sense of joy. If you need enlightenment, meditation is a necessity. Meditation will also help you gain a sense of joy in your life and a sense of well-being that you wouldn't have with keeping all that stress inside of you. You'll feel better, you'll lose that moody and restless feeling and be an all-round better person for it. And you'll like yourself more too. Aside from doing all this meditation alleviates symptoms of anxiety, insomnia, stress, high blood pressure, etc.

Meditation is discipline. Period.

Oh you'll think that discipline is a stressor and you'll be tired and you'll find all kinds of excuses not to do it.  I say phooey!  Disciplining your mind to rest is not stressful. It just takes commitment on your part and some time to get used to the idea that you're not letting all kinds of things get in your way.

The first time you  meditate, you'll probably find at least ten excuses not to do it again. You will have thoughts entering your head that you'll have a hard time letting go of; your everyday chores will creep up and want to stop you from listening to the guided meditation/visualization.  Or you'll feel strange because you're just a beginner and you've never done this before.  You'll think to yourself "What will people think if they see me meditating?"  Well that's ok you can feel all these things and with time they'll go away.

If you were in the Middle-East or in India, China or Japan if would be accepted as just your way of achieving something spiritual or physical for yourself.  Speaking of physical, meditation can be done with positive images to help you gain succes in areas of your life. But more on this later.

Here in theWest, meditation is just beginning to grow as a means of relaxation to achieve well-being. The act of meditating is over 5,000 years old. Look it up! It wasn't started here out west by hippies or cults. It has been an existing form of going into oneself for eons.

With the right teacher/guide you can always share your meditations and ask questions as to how to get rid of bothersome thoughts. Your teacher should be able to guide you through rough times until you get the hang of it and can do it without problems on your own.

My students feel "great" after a session of guided meditation. But don't stop there. There are several methods to explore if you wish. The trick is finding the right one for you.

Change the view, get started on your well-being!

Is this where you see yourself? Make time for yourself. Begin by taking 10 minutes a day to do something that YOU really like.  Even if it's just going for a walk with the dog, or walking down a tree-lined lane. Take the time for YOU.

Perhaps you want to sit by a lake quietly and read a book, or take a candlelit bath, or paint, or work on a project. Or just sit still and listen to your inner voice!  All these things you can do for yourself during your breaks or at night.

The idea is to make yourself the important person for at least 10 minutes.  Work your way up to 20 minutes in a month.  Then work your way up to a half hour.  See? It's easier than you think.

At work, escape for one or two minutes before the crisis of the day becomes your chore. Getting away will give you that much time to breathe properly and get you ready and relaxed so you can do the job with a clear head and mind.

Practice breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth slowly and deeply.
